Family Wealth partner Jim Mitchell spoke on a panel of experts at the Fidelity Charitable Advisor Leadership Forum discussion titled Complex Assets as Charitable Gifts: An Overlooked Tax Strategy for UHNW Clients. The discussion explored the growing trend of contributing complex assets, such as private equity assets, privately-held C-and S-corp stock, limited partnership interests, and certain restricted stock, to public charities.

On April 2, 2013 Coblentz Partner Jon Bass spoke at the Herbst Theater in conversation with psychologist Daniel Kahneman as part of the City Arts & Lectures series on Art & Politics.
Daniel Kahneman is one of the most influential living psychologists. Along with his late collaborator, Amos Tversky, Kahneman is credited with founding the study of behavioral economics. In 2002, Kahneman won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his research on the irrational ways in which humans make decisions about risk. Based on his decades of study with Tversky, Kahneman’s recent book, Thinking Fast and Slow, is an exploration of the psychological basis for reactions, judgments, recognition, choices, conclusions, and much more. Kahneman is a Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs Emeritus at the Woodrow Wilson School, the Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology Emeritus at Princeton University, and a fellow of the Center for Rationality at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Jonathan Bass is a partner at the law firm of Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass LLP. Bass graduated cum laude from Yale University with a degree in Russian language and literature. He earned his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1977. He is a long-time advisor to City Arts & Lectures.

Ian Frazier is a humorist and author, well known for his frequent contributions to The New Yorker. Throughout his non-fiction work, including Family, Great Plains, and On The Rez, Frazier combines in-depth research into history and culture with engaging first-person narrative. His most recent best-selling book, Travels in Siberia, tells the story of Siberia’s most famous exiles, such as Dostoyevsky and Stalin, as well as the lesser-known individuals who hail from the storied expanse of Asiatic Russia. The work – described as “endlessly fascinating…On the Road meets The Gulag Archipelago…” by the New York Times Book Review – reflects Frazier’s signature brand of humor. His other books include Coyote v. Acme and Lamentations of the Father.

Elinor “Nell” Newman, a leader in the industry of organic foods and environmental sustainability, and a noted philanthropist, was the guest speaker at the second annual Women in Conversation event hosted by Coblentz. The event celebrates the accomplishments of women in business, the arts and the community. Ms. Newman, the daughter of actors Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, launched Newman’s Own Organics in 1993, with the proceeds of Newman’s Own Organics donated to charities worldwide.
