Barbara A. Milanovich


Barbara Milanovich is widely recognized as one of the top real estate attorneys in San Francisco. She handles the purchase and sale of properties ranging from remote timberlands to high-rise office buildings. Another substantial part of her practice is representation of both landlords and tenants in office, industrial, and shopping center leases. Barbara also provides ongoing counsel to property owners regarding brokerage agreements, management and service contracts, and operational issues. She brings a practical, business-oriented approach to negotiations, and her in-depth knowledge of the market allows her to represent clients with efficiency and effectiveness.

One of the most satisfying aspects of her practice is the long-term business relationships she has developed with clients. These relationships include serving as outside real estate counsel to a Fortune 500 company for 25 years and advising the institutional owner of a high-rise office building in the San Francisco financial district since construction of the building 30 years ago.

Barbara is a member of the Real Property Law Section of the California State Bar and the Bar Association of San Francisco.

Barbara earned her undergraduate degree in journalism from Indiana University (1975) and received her law degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) (1980). While at Boalt Hall, she served as Managing Editor of the Ecology Law Quarterly.

Sale and Leaseback
A major financial institution sought representation in the sale and partial leaseback of an office park in the East Bay totaling more than one million square feet. This complex transaction included the negotiation of multiple leases, an engineering services agreement, and a reciprocal easements, covenants, conditions, and restrictions agreement. It was named the 2011 Suburban Office Deal of the Year by the San Francisco Business Times. During the prior year, Barbara represented the same client in the sale and leaseback of a one million-square-foot office building in San Francisco.

Laboratory and Office Lease
Barbara led negotiations on behalf of a publicly traded genetic testing company, as tenant, in the lease of a 100,000 square foot building in SOMA for laboratory and office space, including negotiation of an extensive work letter relating to build-out of the premises. This transaction was named to the San Francisco Business Times 2016 Real Estate Deals of the Year.

Distribution Center Lease
Barbara assisted a Fortune 500 company, as tenant, in negotiations to lease a 400,000 square foot state of the art distribution center in Nevada.

Barbara is listed in the Best Lawyers in America in the Real Estate Law category. She has been recognized by Martindale-Hubbell as an AV Preeminent-rated attorney for 20 years, and listed annually as a Northern California Super Lawyer since 2005.
