Barbara Milanovich is widely recognized as one of the top leasing attorneys in San Francisco. She has represented both landlords and tenants in office, industrial, and shopping center leases for more than 25 years. Barbara brings a practical, business-oriented approach to lease negotiations, and her in-depth knowledge of the market allows her to represent clients with efficiency and effectiveness. She also handles the purchase and sale of properties ranging from remote timberlands to high-rise office buildings.

Barbara also provides ongoing counsel to property owners regarding brokerage agreements, management and service contracts, and operational issues, including advising the institutional owner of a high-rise office building in the San Francisco financial district, which she has been representing since construction of the building in 1987.

She has developed a number of other long-term business relationships, including coordinating the firm's role as outside real estate counsel to a Fortune 500 company that is one of the major landowners in California. She has represented that same company in the leasing of over 2,000,000 square feet of office space throughout Northern California and also regularly represents it in various purchase and sale transactions.

Notable Representations

Major Financial Institution
A major financial institution sought representation in the sale and partial leaseback of an office park in the East Bay totaling more than 1,000,000 square feet. This complex transaction included the negotiation of multiple leases, an engineering services agreement, and a reciprocal easements, covenants, conditions and restrictions agreement. It was named the 2011 Suburban Office Deal of the Year by the San Francisco Business Times. During the prior year, Barbara represented the same client in the sale and leaseback of a 1,000,000 square-foot office building in San Francisco.

Fortune 500 Company
Barbara represented a Fortune 500 company, as tenant, in negotiations to lease a 250,000 square-foot office building in the East Bay. She previously represented the same company in lease negotiations for a 135,000 square-foot office building. Both negotiations focused on achieving flexibility to meet the uncertain future space requirements of the tenant. One of the leases includes an option to purchase the building and multiple expansion rights, as well as contraction and termination options.

Barbara is recognized by Martindale-Hubbell as an AV-rated attorney, the highest such rating available to any individual lawyer. She is also recognized as a leading lawyer by Best Lawyers in America. San Francisco Magazine has named Barbara as a "Northern California Super Lawyer" annually since 2005.

Barbara is a member of the Real Property Law Section of the California State Bar and the Bar Association of San Francisco.

Education

Barbara earned her undergraduate degree in journalism from Indiana University (1975) and received her law degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) (1980). While at Boalt Hall, she served as Managing Editor of the Ecology Law Quarterly.
